Well it has become a reality now as of January 1st. The new carbon pricing (tax) is now in effect and as I warned prices have gone up around the various provinces.
The immediate effect has been seen on the price of gasoline, which went up 5 cents a litre overnight. Even though if you work out the percentage it should only be 4.2 cents a litre, the big oil companies have rounded it up to 5 cents and are voicing the blame on the government.
Interestingly the last time fuel prices were this high, oil was trading at 80 dollars a barrel. Meanwhile it is stuck at 51 dollars a barrel. The oil companies snuck in a price increase just days before the new tax took effect and they are hoping we don't notice. Well we did and it is as shameful as the new carbon tax imposed by the government in the name of Global warming.
Well in my last article on Carbon tax, I told you how great it would be if the money actually went towards green projects, such as Solar energy or more Public Transit. But we know the government will put it into general revenue where it will spend it as it sees fit. Lately that has been for projects that make big donor companies rich with new government contracts. New transit remains stagnate and no new green energy programs have been started.
Of course this new Carbon tax is not just on car gasoline, it also affects home heating. Natural gas to heat our homes will increase about 5% on the monthly bill. The worse thing about this is that the tax then gets taxed by federal and provincial taxes. That's right, tax on your tax.
Also look as the price of goods will soon go up as manufactures are being hit with the new tax as well. And you know they are not going to absorb the new cost. It will get passed onto the consumer just like everything else, yet wages stay low.
So where ever you may be from, beware when your government starts talking Carbon Pricing in the name of Global Warning. It is nothing but a tax grab my friends.

Gas Prices part three
In my continuing posts (rants) on current gas prices, we are once again looking at an overnight hike of huge proportions, which once again does not match the formula for lowering gas prices.
When the price of oil plunges downwards, there is never any movement on the price of gas. The excuses the oil companies use is that the more expensive gas is still filtering thru the system and they have to wait to lower prices.
Why is it then when during the day the price of oil goes up two dollars a barrel and exactly at midnight we see the price of gas jump several cents a litre? The oil companies offer no explanation other then the rising costs. But isn't the cheap gas still filtering thru the system? Why no mention of that? Profits my friends, huge quick and easy gouging profits.
This past week we saw oil go up two dollars a barrel in a single day and at midnight the price of gas went up 5 cents a litre. They then put it up a couple of cents more each day until it hit a total increase of 9 cents a litre.
Meanwhile oil is holding steady at $51 a barrel and is looking to trend down. Now you see, the price only went up because the OPEC nations announced they had an agreement in principle to reduce the output of oil by a million barrels a day. Not a large drop when you consider how many 100 of millions they produce a day plus factor in Russia and even the Untied States who is now the leader in oil production.
So they actually haven't stopped making more oil yet, but are only saying they will do it. This causes speculators on the market to buy up oil and drive it's price up. Meanwhile back in reality there is still a glut of oil in the world. The U.S, has so much oil that they are asking Congress to let them start exporting oil. Something that was banned way back in the 1970's over fear of no gas, because of the issues of the day back then.
Well as we keep paying more and more for gas and other energy supplies, is it any wonder why people are asking for better public transit. More bike lanes in the city and electric cars sales are booming.
For those Canadians living in the province of Ontario, there will be no relief in sight as the premier of Ontario has introduced a carbon tax which will come January 1, 2017, increase the price of gas by 4.2 cents a litre. And that tax is subject to the HST tax. Tax on your tax!!!!
Time to trade in the SUV and buy a subcompact!

Gas Prices Part Deux
When I last wrote about gas prices, the price for a barrel of oil was just under $100 and gas prices were fluctuating all over the place.
Today the price has plummeted to $69 a barrel yet gas prices for the most part in Canada have remained stable and high. In the GTA we on average pay about $1.13 per litre, while in Detroit USA, they only pay .87 cents per litre!? Once again Canadians are getting gouged at the pumps.
We (the world) are currently over producing 1 Billion barrels of oil a day. Yes, that's right, a day. Oil producing countries are all fighting for market share, which has led to an abundance of oil and hence gasoline. So the consumer markets in most parts of the world are adjusting to the supply and demand equation, except Canada.
Why can't Canadians get passionate about being ripped off the way we get about a hockey game. When our team loses two in a row, we boo, throw our team sweaters on the ice and beer at the team bench. We get timid though when companies or the government continue to rip us off. The government for sure is asking for the prices to stay high as they collect the 5% GST tax from every fill up. If prices fall as they should, they are out million of dollars of revenue. This is especially true of the federal government who has promised to balance the books next year, which just happens to be an election year here in Canada. The finance minister must be shacking in his boots as I know they projected revenue on Oil staying above $80 a barrel. Now he must tell the Prime Minister not to make to many tax credit promises as they don't have the money!
Yes even in the every day pricing of gas, it gets political. The provinces too are worried as they collect hefty taxes on our gas for their revenue as well.
Politics be dammed! We need the price break at the pumps. Just think how much of those saving could go to buying more Christmas gifts this year. Such spending would be real help to our economy. Or of course we could use it more wisely and pay down any personal debt.
Show us the money!!!!

Gas- Todays forcast
We have all spent years turning on the TV or radio to get the weather forecast for tomorrow. Even easier to do now with the Internet. But times have changed and now more changeable then the weather is the price of gas. So newscasts now give you the current price of gas and any knowledge of change to the price which may be coming overnight. Heck, there are websites solely dedicated to giving you the price of gas for the coming days. Just like the weather.
So what is with all the fluctuation. Up 2 cents a litre today and then 3 more the next, only to drop 6 cents 5 days later. Meanwhile the price of oil is currently stable and staying below that benchmark of $100 a barrel. Sometimes the excuse is on possible loss production due to golf of Mexico hurricanes, or European "stability". What does Europe's issues have to do with the price of gas in Canada? We have the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world. Yes that is right. More then those middle eastern countries who live prosperous lives and pay about 3 cents a litre for their gas.
Now all this gets one thinking. With all that oil, why is our gas so expensive. Even more then the United States. With the conversion, we are paying about $6 a gallon. Yet they almost riot in the US when it goes over four dollars a gallon. Here we just say oh well, what can you do. Maybe Canadian empathy is why we pay so much for gas. I mean its true we export all of our oil to the US and then have to buy it from Venezuela at world prices. Slightly crazy, but that's what we do. We are even in the process of selling several of our oil companies to the Chinese. With China now the 2nd largest manufacturer in the world, you know their not buying the companies to produce fuel for Canada. It will be all going across the sea, leaving us once again buying foreign oil to get our gas.
So you may want to add a gas website to your favourites or download an app to your phone. For today's gas prices will not be the same tomorrow.
